The Platte County Sheriff’s Department responded to the Greenhills Nature Sanctuary between Parkville and Riverside along Hwy. 9 on Saturday to find a dead body.

Deputies found the body of Gregory J. Grohusky, 47, of Lake Waukomis, around 11 p.m. Saturday night.

According to Capt. Frank Hunter, public information officer, Grohusky’s body had been there for several hours before a passerby found him. Hunter said that rigor mortis had already begun to set in, so the body was probably there for three to four hours.

Authorities say Grohusky appeared to have died from a self inflicted gunshot wound to the right temple. According to the police report, his body was found approximately three-fourths of a mile from the entrance along a side trail.

Deputies found Grohusky’s car at the entrance to the park, however, Hunter said deputies did not find a suicide note with the body.

The park is operated by the Platte County Parks and Recreation Department and is only open from dawn to dusk.
