It has been a big year for the Platte County Community Centers. The continued partnership between Platte County and the YMCA of Greater Kansas City has brought needed services to the area including fitness programs and services for children and families, officials say.
A YMCA Center executive from the south center, Garry Linn, reflected on the past year’s success at Thursday’s Platte County Commission meeting. Linn said the YMCA staff is assessing their shortfalls and making plans for the upcoming year.
Platte County Presiding Commissioner Betty Knight said, “We are thrilled with the success of our partnership with the YMCA and the way the citizens are utilizing the facilities and programs.”
The year ended with 1,216 members at the North center in Platte City. Their January campaign is bringing in new members on a daily basis. The last count for the south facility showed a total of 9,000 members, making this the largest facility in the YMCA of Greater Kansas City association.
Both facility locations added new classes to the exercise schedule to accommodate every age. New programs include running clubs, Tai Chi, self defense, dodge ball, volleyball, Jr. boot camp, Jr. fitness, and family fitness. Personal training continues to grow in popularity, with the north facility citing a 50 percent growth in personal training requests.
