Three people were injured in a one-car accident on Interstate 29 just north of Platte City on Sunday afternoon.
Sherri Viland, 58, of Clinton was driving southbound on I-29 in the right lane at about 12:45 p.m. when she apparently fell asleep at the wheel, according to a report by the Missouri State Highway Patrol. The vehicle, a 1995 Chevy Lumina, drifted off the right side of the roadway and struck a highway sign post.
The vehicle then continued through the grassy area between the interstate and an entrance ramp from Hwy. 371, crossed the ramp and traveled down an embankment before coming to rest.
Viland suffered moderate injuries. Also injured were her passengers, Kathleen Day, 63, of Kansas City, Kan., who suffered moderate injuries and was transported by air ambulance to Liberty Hospital; and Allyson Ashley, 56, of Clinton, who suffered serious injuries.
Ashley and Viland were both taken to North Kansas City Hospital. Ashley was the only one of the three not wearing a seat belt, according to the report by the patrol.
A friend of the ladies called The Landmark office this week to report that a dog riding in the vehicle ran from the scene of the accident and as of Tuesday had not been found. The dog is described as a Great Dane, about four years old and weighing about 130 pounds.
The caller said the dog is “very skiddish and is not mean.” She said the dog has skin allergies and needs medication. There was no identification tag on the animal but it was wearing a chain.
