Collector’s office preps for delinquent tax sale

The Platte County Collector’s office has been busy making its list and checking it twice. No, they’re not playing Santa Claus in the office. Quite the opposite. The collector and her staff have been busy preparing for the annual delinquent tax sale.

Delinquent tax properties will head for the auction block at 10 a.m. Aug. 26 in the county commission meeting room located in the Platte County Administration Building.

Platte County Collector Donna Nash informs potential buyers they need to register prior to the sale’s start on Aug. 26. Registration can be done the morning of the sale.

In January, 700 properties were delinquent on property taxes. According to Nash, 85 properties are now on the list.

Most of the delinquent taxes were paid by the owner. Some properties were researched and identified by Sheila Palmer, deputy collector.

In some instances, properties can be listed with a mortgage company, assessor records or not listed under the correct name.

Nash advises if anyone is interested in buying a delinquent property, they should do the proper research before the sale.

“They need to do the research. If you don’t research, the property could be landlocked or part of a subdivision,” Nash said.

Delinquent taxes with penalty, interest and costs may be paid to the county collector at any time before the property is sold.

A certificate of purchase will be issued to the purchaser of the property. The certificate of purchase is retained for two years or until the property is redeemed.

Nonresidents of Missouri may not bid unless special arrangements have been made with the collector prior to the sale.

Bidding begins for the amount of taxes, penalties and fees.

The total purchase price must be paid to the collector’s office immediately at the close of the sale.

The original property owner may redeem a first or second offering property any time within two years from the sale date.

Nash says liens are not extinguished at the time of sale or during any period of redemption.
