County secures option to buy Platte City land

A couple of weeks after a potential partnership with the school hit a deadlock, Platte County Commissioners have taken another step toward the building of a community center in Platte City.

This week the commission signed an option to purchase a tract of land in Platte City that potentially could serve as the site for such a center.

The option is for a five acre tract of land in Platte City owned by A. Reed Kline and James and Norma Laderoute.

The piece of land is described in the signed agreement as “all of Lot 58, Oak Creek Subdivision Second Plat.” It is “off Running Horse Road at Running Horse Terrace,” according to Michael Short, first district county commissioner.

A potential partnership between the county and Platte County R-3 School District hit a snag recently when the county determined the financial commitment from R-3 was not sufficient to proceed with a community center that would include an 8-lane swimming pool, six tennis courts and other amenities. That center would have been located on land near the Northland Career Center along Hwy. 92 in Platte City.

According to Short, the option agreement signed this week states that the sellers of the property will “hold the land and take it off the market for the duration of the agreement, which is 90 days.”

The commissioners will decide within 90 days if the land will be the site of a future community center. A price for the land has not been specified, Short said.
