An exchange of gunfire with a sheriff’s deputy brought death to a 63-year-old man on Graden Avenue near Parkville in Platte County on Saturday evening.
“It appears Kenneth Dougan was fatally wounded as a result of the exchange of gunfire,” said Shelle Browning, information officer for the Platte County Sheriff’s Department.
Browning said it appears authorities had been called to the man’s residence on Graden by a woman who had been sharing the residence with him. The woman had apparently left the residence and called authorities.
Browning said the events unfolded this way:
At about 5:45 p.m., deputies responded to a disturbance call in the 6700 block of Graden. As deputies attempted to make contact with Dougan, who was inside the home, he reportedly fired shots at the deputies. One deputy returned fire, Browning said.
“There were more deputies around, but only one fired,” she explained.
After the gunfire exchange, Dougan retreated back into the home, Browning said. Deputies withdrew and set up a perimeter around the residence.
After several attempts to make contact with Dougan, deputies entered the residence about four hours after the gunfire exchange. Dougan was found dead. There was no one else present in the home at the time of the altercation.
Browning said the officer who fired his weapon has been placed on paid administrative leave, which she said is a standard procedure.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol is conducting an investigation into the incident.
