Weston’s tax rate will not change; street signs tabled

The residents of Weston can give a sigh of relief, the tax rate will stay right where it is for this year anyway.

Weston City Treasurer J.P. Coldren gave final figures to the Weston Board of Aldermen on Monday night.

“The good news is that we’re not going to raise our rates,” announced Coldren.

He explained that the assessed valuation from last year stood at $13,666,888, and that the last amended valuation for this year is $14,332,983.

Coldren stated that the total tax for this year will stay the same as last year at 79 cents per $100 assessed valuation.

Last year this tax generated $107,982 in funds for the city and this year it is expected that $111,662 should be generated.

The board decided to table the street sign issue. A memo from the Citizen’s Committee on Street Signs was presented at the meeting, which showed the projected cost of repairing or replacing the signs would be around $3,000.

It was decided that further research was needed before a decision could be made.

A decision was also tabled on a request submitted by Linda Pennington to build an Inn at Welt and Spring streets.

Pennington said that it would not be a bed and breakfast, instead it would be a 15 room inn that would resemble those built in the late 1800’s and would employ approximately six to eight workers.

She said that two houses near the spot would be removed, but they are not in the historic district and parts of the houses would be recycled.

“There’s a whole laundry list of things to look at,” said Quint Shafer, the city’s attorney. He said that since Pennington does not own the land she will need to meet with the city to get several issues resolved before the board could make a decision. The board did approve directional street corner pole signs that would start at Spring Street and continue to Market Street with local business names on them.

It was agreed that the signs should have three inch tall lettering to create uniformity.
