The event took place on Saturday, May 2, at the park located at 5380 N. Northwood Rd, Kansas City in Platte County.

It was no ordinary ribbon-cutting. Members of the Canterbury Renaissance Festival (the beloved Kansas City Renaissance Festival troupe) was on site in character, bringing a touch of medieval magic to the celebration with Renaissance-themed entertainment.

Attendees explored the impressive new castle-themed playground—complete with towers, climbing features, swings, and more—designed as a natural-themed adventure fit for kings, queens, and aspiring knights.

The Castle Playground is the centerpiece of Phase II improvements at the 110-acre Michael Gunn Park at Platte Meadows.

Platte County acquired the natural area in 2002, with the first phase (including a 1-mile limestone multi-purpose loop trail) opening to the public in April 2022.

Phase II adds the new playground equipment, additional parking, and a shelterhouse facility, further transforming the park into a premier destination for outdoor recreation in southern Platte County.

A butterfly garden developed in partnership with the local Rotary Club is also part of the enhancements.

Refreshments were provided, including castle-themed cookies courtesy of Sweet P’s Bakery in Parkville. Attendees were welcome to take photos with the Renaissance characters and enjoy the new play area right away.

Michael Gunn Park at Platte Meadows features rolling hills, open meadows, and scenic trails, making it an ideal location for family outings, nature walks, and community gatherings. The new Castle Playground adds a play-focused element while preserving the park’s natural character.
