Five firefighters suffered serious injuries when two large Central Platte Fire Department pumper trucks collided in a head-on crash east of Platte City while responding to a structure blaze at a residence. The wreck occurred about 4:10 a.m. Monday on HH Hwy., about two miles east of the city. Three of the injured firefighters remain hospitalized, with two of them in intensive care. Platte County Sheriff’s Department says the circumstances surrounding the wreck remain under investigation by the department’s crash team. Both fire trucks had to be towed from the scene. The two most seriously injured are Larry Bigus, fire chief, and Kent Pine, captain. They were the drivers of the pumper trucks that crashed near the driveway entrance to the residence where a fire had been reported.
The City of Riverside has named a unit of Briarcliff Development Co. to develop Horizons, a 260-acre site at Interstate 635 and Hwy. 9. Officials have unveiled a plan calling for a park-like setting to be home for business development on city-owned land. For now, the city retains ownership of the land but as development occurs Briarcliff or the end-user will purchase the land from the city, Meredith Hauck, director of community relations for Riverside, told The Landmark. The project, officials say, is projected to be home to 5,900 jobs over the next generation. Development in the area will be commercial and industrial, Hauck said.
