Authorities have nailed down the cause of the horrific fire in a Platte City apartment complex that killed a man the morning of Saturday, March 19. Authorities announced they have determined the cause to be “the improper disposal of smoking material, such as cigarettes.” It was learned that soil/fertilizer mixture inside a planter played a role in starting the blaze at the High Pointe Apartment Complex.

A former Platte County R-3 student has been charged with unlawfully entering the high school, where authorities allege he masturbated on underwear taken from boys’ lockers. The young man, of Smithville, has been charged with second degree burglary charges that were filed after high school employees reported a suspicious person had been seen by students in the school prior to school hours. Two students reported chasing an individual out of the boys locker room about 6:30 a.m. on March 23. The person was wearing FedEx clothing.
