An early morning jewelry store burglary is being investigated by the Parkville Police Department.

At 2:20 a.m. Tuesday morning someone smashed the front window of the Parkville Jewelers at 106 Main Street. Kevin Chrisman, police chief, said it appeared to be a quick smash and grab with the person stealing jewelry for no more than 30 seconds.

Chrisman said the police had just received the surveillance video from the store late Tuesday afternoon and would be reviewing the footage to see if a suspect could be identified.

When the window was smashed an audible alarm went off and the perpetrator spent less than a minute grabbing jewelry that was in a discount display at the front of the store before leaving the scene. Chrisman said that most of the expensive jewelry was not on display and had been locked up for the night.

An officer on duty that morning was near the intersection of 9 and 45 Highways and responded to the incident within minutes, according to Chrisman.

Chrisman said there might have been a vehicle waiting for the suspect, which allowed them to get away from the scene so quickly. The officer checked the area, but didn’t find anyone fleeing on foot. There was a fairly heavy rainstorm after the break-in and could have slowed down anyone trying to run away.
