Mrs. Deon Johnson and Rev. Donovan Johnson of Dearborn have announced the engagement of their daughter, Valerie Dawn Johnson of St. Joseph, to Ronald A. Engelken, D.V.M., of DeKalb, Mo., son of Mrs. Pat Engelken and Ben Engelken of Goff, Kan. The future bride received an associate degree in animal health technology from Maple Woods Community College and is employed by W.E. Vets of the St. Joseph Stockyards in St. Joseph. Her fiancé graduated from Kansas State University of Veterinary Medicine and is one of the St. Joseph Stockyards veterinarians.


Lorine and Ralph Kimsey, with their children and grandchildren, celebrated their golden wedding Sunday afternoon, Aug. 2, at the Clubhouse in the Coves. The former Lorine Brown and Ralph Kimsey were married Aug. 1, 1931 in the Smithville Christian Church. Ralph retired from Cook’s Paint Company.

This Big D Supermarket sign on the western edge of Platte City has stood abandoned on city property for years. Now the Platte City Board of Aldermen is looking into the cost of painting it as a “Welcome to Platte City” sign. After all the years it has stood on city property without any rent paid, they figure the city owns the sign.


Mr. and Mrs. James Marshall have returned home from a three-week tour of Greece, the Greek Islands, Turkey and Italy.
