This week, the Missouri Department of Conservation, perhaps somewhat reluctantly after downplaying multiple reported sightings in the past, has confirmed there is at least one mountain lion in Platte County. This time a photograph combined with hair samples that will be submitted for DNA testing, has convinced officials with the conservation department. A landowner in south Platte County near the Missouri River contacted the MDC with a photograph he took last Friday, Nov. 26 of a mountain lion in a tree on his property.
The public is invited to a reception to honor and celebrate Park Hill School District Superintendent Dr. Dennis Fisher, who was recently named the 2011 Missouri Superintendent of the Year. The event will be Thursday, Dec. 2 from 6-8 p.m. at the Tiffany Greens Community Center, 10401 N. Saint Clair Ave., Kansas City in Platte County. There will be refreshments and a tribute to Dr. Fisher begins at 6:30 p.m.
Between the Lines by Ivan Foley: Feels good to have the Missouri Department of Conservation in essence validate the series of articles The Landmark did nearly two years ago about the presence of mountain lions in Platte County. I was beginning to be convinced the MDC was going to remain in a state of denial on this top. If the MDC had not found mountain lion hair in that tree last Friday, would they be telling us the kitty in that photo is a bobcat?
