PLATTE PURCHASE PARK TO HOST WINTER MAGIC
It’s an eye-opening family Christmastime ‘get’ for Platte County and the Northland.
Kansas City’s popular holiday lights drive-thru event, Winter Magic, is moving to Platte Purchase Park in Platte County this year.
Platte Purchase Park is located at 10400 North Platte Purchase Drive, Kansas City in Platte County.
Winter Magic will be open Nov. 1 through Jan. 5, open nightly starting at 6 p.m.
It is one car load, one ticket, one price.
“Get ready to immerse yourself in a dazzling one-mile drive, featuring breathtaking, upgraded light displays and festive music that will make your holiday season unforgettable,” says the Winter Magic website at wintermagickc.com
This is the fifth year for the Winter Magic event, but it’s first year at Platte Purchase Park. Organizers say they have doubled the number of lights this year.
The Kansas City Parks and Recreation Department invites one and all to Kansas City’s premiere drive-thru holiday light show. Families will drive through the longest animated light tunnel in the Midwest.
There are sections dedicated to the 12 days of Christmas, a toy workshop, a KC proud section and much more.
To kick off the magic of the season, a lighting ceremony will be held on Friday, Nov. 1, at 6:30 p.m. A ceremonial switch will be flipped to “turn on” the lights, signaling the official start of Winter Magic.
Guests can enjoy the ceremony from their cars before the drive-thru officially opens.
Immediately following the ceremony, the light show will officially open for cars to begin driving through.
Tickets are $20 per car load Monday-Thursday, $30 per car load Friday and Sunday, and $40 per car load on Saturdays. Tickets are available for purchase at wintermagickc.com.
“Come create lasting memories with family and friends and enjoy the magic like never before. Enjoy your favorite dancing holiday light show displays while you ‘holiday-party-in-your car.’ You’re sure to be vibin’ away to the most modern version of the holiday classics,” event organizers say on the event’s website.
PLATTE PURCHASE PARK
In 2001, Platte County looked out over acres of rolling farmland just north of Hwy. 152 and saw the potential for both passive and active recreation. In partnership with the City of Kansas City, Platte County– with its dedicated sales tax for parks– built Platte Purchase Park, which accommodates sports complexes.
A state-of-the-art playground, shelter and one-mile walking trail are also part of the $1.5 million phase one of the park.
The modern playground equipment includes the Spinner Bowl, the Speeder, the Supernova, the Dorado and the Circuit.
There is a spacious shelter located next to the playground. The shelter is available to rent through the City of Kansas City.
