PCHS SENIOR GETS $500 THROUGH NEWSPAPER’S PROGRAM
Diana Alberty Taveras, a graduating senior at Platte County High School, is this year’s winner of The Landmark English Award.
The award is given each year by The Landmark Newspaper to a graduating senior at the high school who has demonstrated superior skills in the subject of English. The award was created by The Landmark in 1982 to help foster an interest in the English language.
The winner is chosen by a faculty panel at the school.
For the award, Diana receives $500, with $250 coming from the newspaper and another $250 given by a Landmark reader who chooses to remain anonymous.
Proceeds from the sale of Bill Hankins’ Landmark People books, focusing on interesting people of Platte County, also go toward the newspaper’s portion of the award.
Diana is the daughter of Johannes and Dilcia Taveras of Kansas City in Platte County. Diana will be attending Park University this fall. Her plan is to become a fifth grade teacher.
During her time at PCHS, Diana was a member of Future Business Leaders of America for three years, earning first place honors in contests every year. She attended Northland Career Center for the teaching department and served as a student teacher, working together with the teaching substitute when the home room teacher was on leave.
Diana says her parents are her biggest inspiration, as she has learned from them what it takes to work hard. Diana says she has strived to earn scholarships to help keep her college costs down.
