The Platte County Auditor’s Office has released its recommended budget for 2008. A proposed new budget will still need to be approved by the county commission before it becomes an official document. The auditor’s proposed budget lists a projected five percent growth in sales tax revenue.


A man who murdered a Platte City man and then raped that man’s wife has been sentenced to two life terms plus 115 years in prison. Jacob E. McGinnis, 27, of Kansas City, was sentenced last week for first degree murder, rape, first degree burglary and two counts of armed criminal action. Judge Abe Shafer sentenced to McGinnis to life in prison without parole, the maximum sentence for forcible rape, the maximum sentence of 15 years for burglary, and 50 years each on two counts of armed criminal action. Shafer ordered the sentences to run back-to-back.

The Southern Platte County Ambulance District board of directors unanimously has chosen attorney Daniel Fowler of Kansas City to represent the district as its legal counsel. The board has been relying solely on its EMS legal consultant, attorney Frank Foster of Jefferson City, since its original counsel, Mark Hubbard, terminated his agreement with the district by email on Aug. 20. Other attorneys considered by the board were Robert Black of Witt, Hicklin and Snider, and Bradley Grill of Grill Law Firm LLC.
