Downtown Parkville’s historic smokestack is being demolished for safety concerns. The steel rebar supports 80 percent of the tower’s strength and has disintegrated significantly. The 120 ft. tall stack is 88 years old and will take up to 10 days to demolish. Part of Main Street is closed from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. while crews work on the structure. Demolition crews began tearing down the smokestack Sunday evening at 10 p.m. It is located eight feet behind the Power Plant Restaurant & Brewery. Co-owner Tom Hutsler made the decision to demolish the smokestack after getting reports from three different engineering firms.
Patricia Stinnett had the chance to express her concerns over school bonding limitations with Rod Jetton, Missouri Speaker of the House, in Platte County on Friday. Jetton spoke at the Platte Republican Association’s monthly meeting. Stinnett is a member of the Platte County R-3 School Board.
Between the Lines by Ivan Foley: Oops, they did it again. The latest attorney with local ties to take Williams and Campo–Platte City’s special annexation attorneys–to the woodshed is none other than Todd Graves, former county prosecutor/US Attorney. Graves, now running his own show with the law firm of Graves, Bartle and Marcus in Kansas City, had a hand in a lawsuit that will allow a recall vote against a Lee’s Summit city councilwoman. Chris Williams of Williams and Campo unsuccessfully represented Lee’s Summit in the case.
