Burlington Northern Sante Fe Railroad has announced plans for a second set of tracks to be placed through downtown Parkville, and their intentions have prompted the city to respond by hiring a consultant to study the potential impact of more tracks.

Downtowns in small cities in Missouri and across America often aren’t what they used to be. Missouri Gov. Matt Blunt believes he has an initiative now in place that could help a select number of downtown business areas in the state get back on their feet as far as being viable commercial districts, as well as perhaps help with historic preservation and infrastructure improvements. Parkville Mayor Kathy Dusenbery introduced Gov. Matt Blunt in Parkville Monday morning as he promoted an effort to revitalize downtowns.

An initiative to consider creating the Parkville Old Town Market Community Improvement District drew a crowd to Tuesday night’s meeting of the Parkville Board of Aldermen. A petition proposes an added one percent sales tax in downtown Parkville, which would create a separate political subdivision. This district’s boundaries include East 5th Street to the river’s edge, encompassing the downtown business district.

Park Hill School Board members Fred Sanchez and Bob Weidt recently attended the Missouri School Boards Association’s Leadership Summit in Columbia.
