State Commander Charles H. Wilcox, Springfield, and State Chairman Dr. Leon Miller, Maryville, presented J. Robert Batterson of West Platte High School, Weston, his third place medal, certificate and $200 college scholarship in the Legion oratorical contest. Orations in the contest were on some phase of the Constitution of the United States. Batterson is a senior at West Platte High. He had previously won at the high school, county, district and zone levels. His speech coach is Mrs. Kathy Felton. He was sponsored by American Legion Post 501, Weston.


The Rev. and Mrs. Kyle Hern announce the birth of their daughter, Lindy Starr Frazee Hern, born Saturday, Feb. 28 at Spelman Memorial Hospital. She weighed eight pounds, 7.5 ounces. She has a brother, Nathan, 21 months old, to welcome her home.

David Moul of Compton’s Education Services, Mission, Kan., put on a magic show for Mrs. Carolyn Griffin’s Baptist Day Care Center children in Platte City and used a lot of magic devices that went over big with the kids. Here, he gets Kevin Davenport to ring the buzzer by the correct answer on the magic board. About 14 toddlers and a couple too young to walk watched the show.


Mrs. Alice West, chief deputy in the Platte County Circuit Clerk’s office, has announced her intention to file for the office of circuit clerk.
