Scotty Williams brought home the state 167-pound wrestling title from the Missouri 1A-3A tournament held in Columbia over the weekend. The Pirate wrestling representative captured fifth place overall in competition with 90 schools and more than 200 wrestlers. Mark Verdoorn, 155 pounds, captured second place. Pirate wrestling coach Stan Whitmore was elated at the showing of the four wrestlers at the state competition. Sophomore Ricky Hoskins, 119 pounds, won sixth place. Ken Klingenberg, 112 pounds, who was third in the district meet, won his first match in the state tournament then lost to the eventual third place state winner.
A Platte County R-3 student is pictured improving his reading skills using an electronic machine designed for individualized instruction. The school district has a variety of audio-visual equipment for individual and group education.
They don’t make schools like they used to, at least in the Platte County R-3 system. In the R-3 district, the classroom with a prim-dressed authoritarian school marm presiding over boys and girls seated at desks in neat rows is gone. Instead, there are a variety of classrooms, based on teachers’ individual philosophies of learning and students’ unique needs.
