EDITOR:
I read in the Jan. 7, 2026 edition of The Landmark that a cost of living increase of five percent for the police was denied.
It immediately occurred to me that the denial was probably related to the enormous wad of taxpayer money that was recently spent on the clerk, collector, public administrator, assessor, auditor and treasurer. Their 30% raise was on top of an 8% raise they had just been given a short time before, as I understand. Therefore, it does not surprise me that responsible parties had to make the unpopular decision to cut back on further spending.
The out-of-proportion 30% raise was bound to cause trouble within county government and so it has. Most average people could have told Platte County leaders that you don’t give extra favors to some of your kids than you give to the others; maybe there’s a way to un-give that crazy raise and regain some balance. We are watching.
