The United States Metro Phillips 66 service station on Hwy. 92 next to Leo’s Country Mart in Platte City was robbed at 9:45 a.m. Thursday when the cashier was approached by a tall, slender black male who asked her for some cigarettes and then handed her a note demanding money. When she refused him the money, he raised up his waist-length black leather jacket and produced a gun in a plastic bag from the belt line of his pants, according to Platte City Police chief Ron Canaday. Frightened, the cashier ran to the back room and locked herself in. When she did, the suspect “leaned through the window and grabbed some cash and fled on foot.” The cashier just marked her 15th anniversary with the service station without incident until Thursday. The cashier had seen the man walk by the front of the station several times without stopping.
WDAF-TV meteorologist Gary Lezak and his popular dog Windy are pictured with students from North Platte Middle School during a visit by the duo last week. Lezak talked with children at both the middle and elementary schools at R-1 about tornadoes and showed close-up footage of actual tornadoes in Oklahoma. Windy held the most fascination, however, by doing her famous gunshot trick, among others. Lezak did not leave empty handed, as the children presented him with many gifts including a matching hand-painted ties for him and his dog, designed by second grade teacher Lori Barngrover.
