Park Hill South High School in Riverside sustained significant vandalism Saturday night, with damage estimates ranging from $7,000 to $10,000. School officials say the outdoor classroom area and the athletic complex sustained damage. Officer Brent Holland with the Riverside Police Department said bird houses, cameras, fencing and other items associated with the outdoor nature classroom were damaged. At the sports complex, some sod was destroyed at the softball field and ticket counter windows were damaged at the soccer stadium.
Residents are encouraged to be on alert as thieves have been targeting homes in rural northern Platte County. Cpt. Frank Hunter of the Platte County Sheriff’s Department says there have been 14 reported burglaries in the month of October. The crime spree isn’t just hitting Platte County, as homes in rural areas of Buchanan, Clay and Clinton counties have also been victimized.
In celebration of Platte County Presiding Commissioner Betty Knight’s 16 years of public service and her approaching retirement, her fellow commissioners Kathy Dusenbery and Jim Plunkett will be holding an open house in her honor. It is scheduled for Oct. 29 from 2-5 p.m. in the commission meeting room in the Platte County Administration Building. Comments are anticipated at 3 p.m.
