IT WILL INCLUDE A ‘DESTINATION PLAYGROUND’

The Platte County Commission authorized the purchase of new, natural-themed playground equipment for Michael Gunn Park at Platte Meadows, located at 5310 N. Northwood Road, Kansas City in southern Platte County.

In addition to the new playground, the project will include additional parking, restroom facility, and a shelterhouse.

County officials said construction will begin in late summer 2025, with construction finalized by spring 2026.

Cost to the county will be more than a million dollars–$1,114,362 to be exact–under terms of an agreement with KOMPAN, Inc., a commercial playground equipment manufacturer.

These enhancements, which are funded by the voter approved quarter cent parks and stormwater sales tax, represent a major addition to the Platte County Parks system.

County officials describe Michael Gunn Park at Platte Meadows as a “nature-based park,” but “we are adding some amenities near the entrance to the park,” said Daniel Erickson, parks director for the county.

Erickson said the lifespan for this type of equipment is typically 20-30 years.

The new playground will consist of nature based materials and designed with inclusivity and safety in mind.

“It will be a destination playground where people will travel to the park just for the playground,” Erickson said during Monday’s county commission session. “I think it will be a great amenity to the park, we’re excited about it,” he added.

“These improvements reflect Platte County’s commitment to enhancing public spaces and providing high-quality recreational facilities for residents,” the county said in a press release this week.

Michael Gunn Park at Platte Meadows is a 110-acre natural area that the county acquired in 2002. The first phase of park improvements opened to the public in April of 2022 and featured a one mile limestone surface multi-purpose loop trail.

Located near Walden Middle School and Park Hill South High School, the park serves as a community hub, with trails accommodating school cross-country teams.

The surrounding area has seen significant growth, including the reconstruction of Northwood Road and new residential developments, further solidifying the park’s role as a recreational cornerstone.

“This new playground is going to be a fantastic addition to southern Platte County,” said First District Commissioner Allyson Berberich. “We’re creating a fun, safe, and welcoming park where kids can play freely and families can connect. These improvements will truly elevate Michael Gunn Park at Platte Meadows, turning it into a go-to destination for outdoor fun and community gatherings.”

Commissioner Joe Vanover highlighted the project’s significance.

“Michael Gunn Park at Platte Meadows is a large park with great potential,” said Vanover. “The new playground, expanded parking, and site improvements will make it an even better destination. I only wish this park would have been open while my kids were still little.”
