Weather was the major topic of conversation as heavy snowfall and frigid temperatures hit the area last week. Although the amount of snow varied greatly within the county, most people placed estimates at four to six inches. The snow closed schools early and kept law offices busy responding to fender-benders, but by Tuesday temperatures were slightly above freezing and sunshine had started to melt the snow.

In the giant bag pictured behind Jim Fischer is 1300 cubic feet of methane (natural gas) produced from hog manure at the University of Missouri-Columbia’s Swine Farm. Fischer, a USDA agricultural engineer, and his UMC colleagues built the manure digester that makes the gas. They say digesters like this one are now on the brink of being economically feasible for providing 80 to 90 percent of a hog farm’s energy needs (natural gas and electricity).
Nathan York suffered injuries to his leg while at work at B.F. Goodrich, Kansas City, Tuesday. He was able to go back to work on Monday.
