AT HARREL FERREL PARK

City of Platte City will seek a parks and recreation outreach grant from Platte County in the hopes of replacing and improving bleachers at Harrel Ferrel Park, the baseball fields near Fourth and Hwy. 92.

The request would be for a grant not to exceed $16,000 to replace and improve the bleachers at the park. The city would be required to pay for the entire project prior to receiving 50 percent of the funds in the form of the grant reimbursement.

The city has pursed and been awarded numerous small projects from the county’s outreach grant program through the years.

City staff say the current bleachers at the park lack easy access for visitors with mobility challenges and reach a height slightly above that recommended by the city’s insurance carrier.

“Replacing the bleachers would allow the city to provide seating at park events that is both compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and safer for those utilizing the bleachers,” wrote Tom Cole, city administrator, in a report to aldermen.

Cole said the city would be required to provide funds in the amount of 50% not to exceed $16,000, however the entire project may be less than that value.

“Staff believes this is a worthwhile grant application as an award would be straightforward, within the city’s budget and would accomplish a project that would not require a significant use of city labor to interfere with many additional projects,” Cole wrote to aldermen.

The county will announce grant awards sometime in 2025.
