EDITOR:

There is no excuse or justification for the Platte County Commissioners’ arrogant notion that they can choose not to implement a tax that county voters supported by a significant margin.

The commissioners’ absurd semantic arguments about the ballot measure language are outrageous. I hope this matter comes before a judge soon and can be dismissed as the anti-democratic insult that it is.

Scott Fricker’s claim that his opinion represents the preferences of all the county residents who did not vote can only be described as laughable. He seems to be suggesting that he can read the minds of thousands of people and that these extraordinary powers of his reveal an amazing unanimity of opinion.

Given what these shenanigans have revealed about the commissioners’ apparent belief that they are not bound by the voters who put them in their positions, in the year ahead we should all pay much closer attention to what the commission says and does. They do not deserve our trust; instead, they absolutely deserve our close scrutiny of their actions.
