Effective this week, The Landmark has a new columnist–and his name will be familiar to news junkies in general and talk radio listeners in particular. Chris Stigall joins The Landmark’s stable of entertaining and opinionated contributors and will pen a weekly column to appear on page A-3. He replaces longtime columnist CK Rairden, who has stepped down after 10 years of political commentary with The Landmark. Stigall is a rising star in the talk radio business. His show runs 5-9 a.m. each weekday on KCMO 710 AM in Kansas City.
Overall construction activity is down 33 percent in Platte County this year, and the decline is even more dramatic in new home construction, according to Gale Cantu, codes coordinator for Platte County. Total building permits thus far are 143 for 2009, down from 215 at this time last year. Construction of new single family homes is down by 50 percent from last year at this time. Cantu said through June of 2008, 44 single family building permits had been issued. Through June of this year, that number has dropped exactly in half, down to 22.
Road improvements along Fourth Street in Platte City are moving forward. The improvements along Fourth Street would stretch from Thomas Street south to the city limits. The project will improve the roadway to have two 12-foot lanes, curbs and gutters, closed drainage, and sidewalks.
