Former City Hall parking area will open to public

This parking lot behind the former City Hall in Platte City at 400 Main Street will soon be open to the public.

IT CREATES 17 SPACES FOR PUBLIC USE

Public parking will be allowed in the parking lot behind the former City Hall at 400 Main Street in Downtown Platte City.
City officials made it official by passing a resolution last week. The change becomes effective June 15.

The parking lot will be open to the public from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days per week. Overnight parking is prohibited.

The resolution passed by aldermen authorizes the chief of police “to revoke parking at any time,” if public parking causes any problems or impairs city access to the building.

There are 12 parking spots within the lot and additional five city spots in the Fourth Street side parking area, for a total benefit of 17 parking spots.

Platte City no longer occupies the building and thus has not been using the lot. The city moved into its new City Hall at 224 Marshall Road last November.

A staff report from DJ Gehrt, interim city administrator, to the board of aldermen indicates the “resolution will be effective June 15 to ensure parking is available for the June 7 blood drive in the building and to allow time to order signage to post the lot.

City officials say the additional parking spots will help alleviate any parking issues in the downtown business district/courthouse area.

The public parking will remain in place at least until renovation work begins on the old City Hall building in the summer of 2025, city officials indicated.
