45 Years Ago–Dec. 8, 1978

Some of the family will be zapping alien spacecraft, stalking dangerous submarines, and playing black jack under the nation’s Christmas trees this year. It’s all part of a microcircuit revolution that is transforming toy land. The technology spawned by the computer and applied to such mass-produced items as calculators and digital watches is appearing in games and toys that test the user’s skill and logic. Flashing lights, sound effects, even the sound of human voices make some of the playthings seem almost surrealistic, reports the National Geographic Society.


Navy Airman David H. Wellons, son of Edward G. and Gladys E. Fowler of Parkville, has completed recruit training at the Naval Training Center, San Diego. During the eight week training cycle, he studied general military subjects designed to prepare him for further academic and on-the-job training in one of the Navy’s 85 basic occupational fields.


A representative of Sen. Tom Eagleton’s Western Missouri office will be in Platte County on Dec. 13 and 14. Woody Overton, staff assistant to Sen. Eagleton, will be available during these times to discuss matters with the senator’s constituents concerning the federal agencies and their programs.
