To handle zoning legal work for county

ALREADY IN-HOUSE

Attorney Stephen Magers has been appointed as special counsel for matters involving planning and zoning in Platte County, the county commission announced on Monday.

Magers has been employed as an in-house attorney for the county assessor’s office since 2016.

“Steve will continue to work for the county assessor’s office, but he will devote some of his time to the legal issues for the planning and zoning department,” said Joe Vanover, second district county commissioner. Magers worked with former county counselor Bob Shaw on several occasions in recent years.

“Steve was highly recommended by Bob,” Vanover said.

Magers graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia school of law.

The county commission is still working to fill the county counselor position. The new county counselor will handle non-planning and zoning issues. Vanover said recently the commission has conducted interviews of attorneys James Thomas and his associate Micah Moore; and law partners Rob Redman and Kelly Tobin. It’s possible a decision will be made as early as next week, Vanover indicated.

Shaw retired from the post of county counselor effective Oct. 1 after serving for well over 30 years.
