30 Years Ago–Oct. 15, 1993

North Platte High School’s homecoming is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 15 with the annual homecoming parade beginning at 2 p.m. The North Platte Panthers will be playing the Mid-Buchanan Dragons. Queen candidates are: Lori Lewis, Shelly Shafer, Tricia Mayer, Jaime Jacks, and Jennifer Shanks. King candidates are Robert McMillan, Matt Denney, Jeff Johnson, Brian Richardson, and Aaron Cluck. Coronation of the king and queen will take place at halftime of Friday night’s football game with Mid-Buchanan.


Erica Sorenson, a sixth grader at Plaza Middle School, won top honors in a statewide poster contest sponsored by the Missouri State Council of the International Reading Association. Erica, daughter of Eric and Angela Sorenson, won first place for the 10-14 age group and her poster was also declared best overall. Erica’s poster featured artwork and the words “Reading Is Exercise 4 Your Brain!” Color copies of her poster were distributed to schools throughout Missouri in the state reading council’s newsletter.


The Corps of Engineers at Smithville Lake announce the fourth annual “Managed Deer Hunt for the Physically Challenged” to take place at Smithville on Nov. 20 and 21. Hunters must have permanent mobility impairments to be qualified. Organizers say most if not all hunters will be persons confined to wheelchairs or severely limited in mobility.
