45 Years Ago–Sept. 8, 1978

The worst infestation of grasshoppers in 20 years has struck farms and ranches in the American West. Farmers in Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska and Oklahoma have used insecticides in vain efforts to stem the outbreak. The last outbreak of this severity was in 1958 when the insects wiped out crops valued at more than $60 million.


The Platte City Pirates lost the season opener last Friday at Richmond, 38-0. Richmond scored 32 points in the second quarter including a safety, then scored again in the fourth quarter.


Platte City Sidewalk Sale and Flea Market will be Friday and Saturday, Sept. 15 and 16. Advertising special sales are: Shirley’s Fashion Center; The Alley Shoppe, Platte Fair IGA; Wells Bank of Platte City; Crouch Drug; Double Western Store; Leo’s Thriftway.


An afternoon of fun and games for all persons in the Platte City area who are 55 years of age or older will be held at the Platte City United Methodist Church on Wednesday, Sept. 13 from 1:30 to 3 p.m. The fun is sponsored by the United Methodist Women.


A trip for all Platte County senior citizens who are 60 and over is being planned to the Eisenhower Library and Museum in Abilene, Kan.
