45 Years Ago–Sept. 2, 1978

The football season opens this week with lots of action tonight. The Northwest 11 schedule for tonight is: Platte City at Richmond; Maysville at East Buchanan; Lathrop at Lawson; Oak Grove at Kearney; West Platte at St. Joseph LeBlond; Plattsburg at Grain Valley; Smithville at Gallatin and DeKalb at North Platte.

Ray Sell, the Kansas City, North district manager of United Telephone Company, has asked hunters to exercise caution when shooting near telephone cable, wire and other facilities. Sell said: “Every year, we receive many reports caused by gunshot damage to telephone cable, wire, insulators and other equipment. This damage often leaves customers without telephone service for a number of hours. The damage cases are especially heavy during the dove and quail hunting season. Birds should not be shot at while perched on telephone cables.”

Plans are now under way for the eighth annual Joseph Robidoux Festival to be held Oct. 6, 7, and 8. This year the location will be at the former Hirsch Department Store Building at Eighth and Felix Streets in St. Joseph. The old fashioned theme will once again prevail over the festival. This gala event combines many features to please every member of the family, such as home tours of grand and elegant structures and private homes long known to the area.
