IN THE AREA OF NW 88TH STREET

Kansas City police are investigating a homicide that apparently occurred in the area of NW 88th Street, Kansas City in the Northland.

Police say officers with the KCPD were dispatched to the 400 block of NW 88th Street shortly after midnight, early Friday, Aug. 18. The location is near the Clay-Platte county line.

Cpt. Corey Carlisle with the KCPD says upon arrival, officers located an unknown male in the rear of the dispatched residence. Officers detained this individual prompting further investigation.

According to police, after preliminary investigations, detectives were directed to a residence in the 400 block of NW 88th Terrace and were given access by the occupants of the residence. Officers then discovered an adult male who was unresponsive and suffering from apparent bodily trauma. EMS responded and declared the victim deceased.

Police identified the victim as Daniel T. Lainson, age 56.

As of Friday morning, there was a subject of interest in custody.

“Detectives are working to submit the case file to the Clay County Prosecutor’s Office for consideration of charges,” Carlisle said mid-morning on Friday.
Carlisle says the circumstances surrounding the homicide are unknown at this time.

Homicide detectives and crime scene personnel responded to the scene. They will be processing the scene to recover any evidence and speaking to any potential witnesses, Carlisle said on Friday morning.

UPDATE

Charges were announced against a suspect early this week.

A 34-year-old man, described as a possible “drifter” by Kansas City homicide detectives, is accused of stabbing and beating a friend to death in a Northland home.

Clay County prosecutors charged Jonathan A. Dehaan, whose last known address was in Kansas City, with second-degree murder and armed criminal action in the killing of Daniel T. Lainson, 56. Dehaan was arrested early Friday morning after someone called police about a possible prowler in the Sherrydale neighborhood.

As of Tuesday, Dehaan was being held in Clay County jail on a $1 million bond.
