A surprise storm Sunday about 3 a.m. swept across an area from Weatherby Lake to Nashua that was a near tornado. Whirling winds knocked down many trees in the Barry area, with large hail and torrential rain. Gardens are all but ruined and electrical power was off for a time. A number of windows were broken.


Mrs. Sylvia Miller and Mr. Bill Amos of Platte City announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Jill Ann Amos, to Tim Fain, also of Platte City. Tim is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Al Fain of Scottsdale, Ariz. An October wedding is planned.

Rita Kay Biggs, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joedd Biggs, Platte City, and Mark Bradley Mock, son of Mr. and Mrs. William I. Mock, Camden Point, were married on July 22, 1978 at the United Methodist Church in Platte City. The double ring ceremony was performed by Rev. Kyle Hern, minister of the United Methodist Church of Platte City, and the Rev. Ken Lutgen, minister of the Red Bridge Methodist Church, assisted.


Mr. and Mrs. Jack L. Johnson of Weston announce the approaching marriage of their daughter, Beth Johnson, to Daniel Longsdorf, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence L. Longsdorf, all of Weston. The couple will exchange marriage vows on Sept. 16 at 2 p.m. at the Christian Church in Weston.
