Bed Bath & Beyond, a store that in its heyday offered a variety of products for your home, filed for bankruptcy over the weekend. The store shown here at Barrywoods, Interstate 29 and Barry Road in Platte County, has been closed for some time. The company’s existing 360 Bed Bath & Beyond stores will remain open for now, as will websites. The company secured a $240 million loan to help fund operations during its bankruptcy, CNN reported over the weekend. The company has said it will seek to sell some or all of its business. If it’s able to find a buyer, Bed Bath & Beyond will halt store closings. But if a buyer does not come forward, Bed Bath & Beyond will likely be liquidated entirely and go out of business. Bed Bath & Beyond had been a crown jewel among chains known as “category killers,” dominating every category of retail, such as stores like Toys “R” Us, Circuit City and Sports Authority. Those companies also fell on hard times when shoppers turned away from huge specialty stores in favor of online shopping options such as Amazon.
