PROJECT SET TO BEGIN THIS MONTH
More than two miles of Interurban Road will soon get new asphalt, officials say.
Interurban Road is a north-south roadway generally located in northeastern unincorporated Platte County.
The project is part of the 2023 road maintenance program announced for the Platte City Special Road District by Brad Fryrear, road superintendent.
Fryrear announced that 2.5 miles of Interurban Road between NW 144th Street and Missouri State Route HH is scheduled to be milled and overlaid with asphalt. The work is scheduled to begin the week of April 24, weather permitting, according to the road district.
Superior-Bowen Asphalt was awarded the contract by the Platte City Special Road District in February with the scope of work to perform a two-inch milling and removal of the road surface and apply a new asphalt surface.
“The Interurban has a long history dating back to its inception when worked began in 1911 on a light rail system, providing transportation for residents in Platte County. Rural growth has seen the Interurban Road adapt and establish its importance as a traffic corridor connecting the north and south portions of the county,” Fryrear said.
The Kansas City, Clay County & St. Joseph railway maintained the right-of-way until ceasing operations, May 1933. Since that time, several agencies have assumed maintenance responsibilities, including the Platte City Special Road District.
Road district officials say residents and businesses using the Interurban Road are advised to use an alternate route of travel as delays can be expected while resurfacing operations are being completed.
