The list was compiled by the Kansas City Business Journal and was published in the Journal’s edition of Feb. 3-9, which hit the streets on Friday, Feb 3.

The 50 oldest businesses in the Kansas City area are listed in that Feb. 3 edition and the story can be found at https://www.bizjournals.com/kansascity/subscriber-only/2023/02/03/kansas-citys-oldest-local-businesses.html

The Landmark was established on Sept. 28, 1865, and has been in continuous operation since that date.

The Kansas City Business Journal included both sides of the state line in its list. It included Leavenworth County, not typically included in references to the Kansas City metro area. The Landmark is the second oldest business on the Missouri side in the Kansas City area.

There are a total of three Platte County businesses named in the top seven on the list. In addition to The Landmark coming in at No. 5, McCormick Distilling Co., Inc. comes in at No. 2 and the Weston Chronicle lands at No. 7.

The Top 10, in order, are:

  1. Davis Funeral Chapel, Leavenworth, Kan., established 1855.
  2. McCormick Distilling Co. Inc., Weston, established 1856.
  3. McCaffree-Short Title Co., Overland Park, Kan., established 1857.
  4. Great Western Manufacturing Co. Inc., Leavenworth, Kan., established 1858.
