The Platte County Sheriff’s Office says the crash occurred about 8:35 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9 in the 2600 block of Running Horse Road just north of the intersection with Maple Farm Road.

Authorities say a 2017 Harley Davidson motorcycle being driven by John Weir was traveling southbound on Running Horse when the motorcycle was struck by a 2008 Mercury Sable that was traveling northbound on Running Horse.

The sheriff’s office says based on witness statements, the Mercury Sable crossed the center line and struck the motorcycle head-on.

Authorities say John Weir, 48, died at the scene. A passenger on his motorcycle, Laura Weir, 45, Platte City, was transported to an area hospital with serious injuries, according to the crash report by the sheriff’s office.

Driver of the Mercury Sable is identified by authorities as Tiffany Sayre, 40, of Platte City, who was not injured.

According to preliminary investigation by the Platte County Sheriff’s Office Crash Team, alcohol was not a factor in the crash.

The Platte County Sheriff’s Department says the cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Major Erik Holland said the sheriff’s department worked the scene at the request of the Platte City Police Department. “We have equipment for these type of major crashes that smaller cities won’t have,” Holland said.
