Last week’s major bridge collapse in Minneapolis on Interstate 35 has caused many states to rethink the way they inspect bridges. In Missouri, Gov. Matt Blunt called for an immediate inspection of the state’s 11 bridges with the same construction as the bridge in Minneapolis. One of those bridges is in Platte County. The Fairfax Bridge across the Missouri River from Fairfax to Riverside contains deck truss construction on the approach portion of the bridge. The Fairfax inspection is scheduled to begin Aug. 13.
By a count of 53% in favor to 47% opposed, Riverside voters on Tuesday approved an involuntary annexation that will expand the city limits by roughly 133 acres. The land being annexed is undeveloped property bordered by Hwy. 9 on the south and Northwood Road on the east. A proposed housing development known as the Montebella Project played a direct role in the city’s desire to annex the area.
Grading work for Settler’s Crossing Park at the end of Main Street was recently completed in Platte City. The park will feature a shelter house overlooking the Platte River.
