Two primaries needed in Platte County

Multiple GOP candidates for clerk, recorder

This is an election year on the county level, and after the filing deadline past last week it appears there will be a couple of primary elections needed in August.

The Republicans have two candidates running for county clerk and two candidates who filed for county recorder of deeds. A primary election for Republican voters to choose in those two contests is scheduled on Tuesday, Aug. 2.

In addition to two primary battles, there will be competitive general election races in November for countywide candidates. The winner of the Republican primary for county clerk will have a Democratic challenger waiting in November. And for presiding commissioner, the Democrats have a candidate waiting to challenge the Republican.

A quick summary:

PRESIDING COMMISSIONER: Scott Fricker is the Republican candidate. He is a political ally of current commissioners Ron Schieber, who has chosen not to seek re-election as presiding commissioner after serving two terms, and first district commissioner Dagmar Wood. Both have endorsed Fricker for the post.

The other person who will be on the ballot for presiding commissioner in the general election November is John DeFoor, Sr., Democrat.

COUNTY CLERK: Current clerk Nancy Armstrong chose not to seek re-election after two terms.

Two Republicans filed for the office, which will force a primary run-off in August. Those candidates are political newcomer Laurie Walls, who filed on March 1; and Jera Pruitt, a former county public administrator, who filed on March 29, the final day of the filing period.

A Democrat will be waiting for the Republican primary winner. In the November election, Democrat Rebecca Nafzinger will be there to challenge the winner of Walls vs. Pruitt.

Nafzinger filed for office on March 15. Another Democrat, Susanne Rutherford, had filed on March 11 but Rutherford then withdrew on March 29.

RECORDER OF DEEDS: Gloria Boyer is retiring as recorder of deeds and two Republicans have filed for the chance to be her replacement.

Travis Youmans filed as a candidate on Feb. 22. Christopher L. Wright filed on March 29, the final day for registering.

COUNTY COLLECTOR: Incumbent Sheila Palmer, Republican, first elected in 2014, is running for her third term. She is unopposed.

COUNTY AUDITOR: Incumbent Kevin Robinson, Republican, was first elected in 2010. He is unopposed.

COUNTY PROSECUTOR: Eric Zahnd, Republican incumbent, is running unopposed. He was first elected in 2002 and is seeking his sixth term of office.
