The Platte County R-3 School District is seeking submissions from district residents on name suggestions for the “New Middle School #2” being built in the district’s southern attendance area, on donated property near Hwy. 152 and Platte Purchase Drive. This new middle school is scheduled to open for the 2023-24 school year.

R-3 residents are invited to submit name suggestions by filling out a quick online form located on the district’s homepage under “headlines” or “announcements,” or by filling out a suggestion form at any PCR-3 school. Suggestions should include the proposed name and why the name was recommended.

Board policy provides guidelines on the process for naming new facilities, and criteria states that “schools/facilities should provide an inspiration to students, should be named to provide unique identity that unifies the district and community, should stand the test of time, may be named after an area or community where the school facility is located, or other geographic or historic location, will not be named for living persons, and will not be named for a deceased person, aside from well-known historical figures, to acknowledge that the number of worthy candidates will always exceed the number of buildings.”

District residents will have the opportunity to submit name suggestions through Jan. 29. Then a facility naming committee consisting of community members, students, and staff will meet to narrow the suggested names and recommend a “short list” for consideration by the board of education at the March board of education meeting on March 10, 2022. The board will make the final decision on the name of the new middle school building.
