Week 7 – Foley-do voodoo?

James Bond villain version of Baron Samedi

Halloween is upon us, and with that in mind, I’d like to reacquaint everyone with Baron Samedi, a fictional character from the James Bond novel and film Live and Let Die. He was a henchman to Dr. Kananga and portrayed a voodoo practitioner and spirit. The Baron was played by the late actor and singer Geoffrey Holder (who was also known for his work as the 7-Up soda spokesman).

It would be an understatement to say that Week 7 provided some surprises for Pickem prognosticators. The Giants beat the Panthers and Tennessee beat the Chiefs. Those two losing teams didn’t even score a touchdown. The same can be said for Houston and the Bears. In total those four teams got outplayed 14 to 121.

The Panthers loss really stung as it vaulted Ivan Foley back to the top spot. The guy must be in league with Baron Samedi and have some magic chicken-bone voodoo going on to pick the Giants for the win. He also successfully picked against the Chiefs (again). Well – we will have to see how strong his vodoo is this week as the Giants play the Chiefs.

Although Ivan landed in the top spot, he has chosen to forfeit his position in first place in exchange for a fresh can of 7-up for his friend, the Baron. Who knows, maybe Ivan and the Baron are closer than we think.

Foley, winning for the second time this season, had 11 of 13 picks correct and finished with 17 tie-breaker points. Foley hereby hands the first place prize to the second place finisher, Corla Dawson. [cue sound of a bottle of 7-up opening…]

So putting the Foley Voodoo aside, the winners for Week 7 in order are:

  1. Corla Dawson with 11 picks correct and 12 tie-breaking points.
  2. Hoopsrun with 11 picks correct and 8 tie-breaking points.
  3. Grantjackson with 10 picks correct and 15 tie-breaking points.

Happy Halloween! Time to start making your Week Eight picks.
