Missouri Department of Transportation has announced the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the new Buck O’Neil/US 169 Missouri River Bridge, formerly the Broadway Bridge.
The ceremony will take place at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 23 in the parking lot of the TWA Museum at Kansas City’s Wheeler Downtown Airport as MoDOT and its partners kickoff this highly anticipated project.
The ceremony will feature speakers including Gov. Mike Parson, Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas, former KCMO Councilman Ed Ford, and MoDOT Director Patrick McKenna.
In February of 2021, the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission selected Massman-Clark, A Joint Venture as the design-build contractor to replace the current Buck O’Neil Bridge.
The new Missouri River Bridge will cost close to $220 million dollars to construct and will provide a safe, connective and accessible transportation facility that improves regional and local system performance. The Massman-Clarkson team includes the following firms: Massman Co., Clarkson Construction Co. and HNTB Corporation- all of Kansas City.
The John Jordan “Buck” O’Neil Memorial Bridge is a triple arch bridge carrying U.S. Route 169 over the Missouri River, and serves as a key regional connection between downtown Kansas City and communities north of the river. While safe, the bridge is nearing the end of its projected service life. Opened in 1956, the bridges sees close to 50,000 vehicles, daily.
