Be a hater if you want, but what the world needs now is an Air Supply concert.
And there should be a SiriusXM channel that plays nothing but Taylor Swift songs. You know I’m right about this.
When concerts return to the Ameristar Casino in Kansas City (which happens later this month), the concert ticket giveaways return to Landmark Live. At least the giveaways for tickets I don’t want to use. Don’t expect Air Supply giveaways. Those are mine.
Part of what I enjoy about the Air Supply concerts is to watch the ol’ dudes work the crowd. Lead singer Russell Hitchcock still fancies himself a ladies man, and spends an entire song walking throughout the crowd in the small arena shaking hands and kissing babes (I said babes, not babies). And who knows, he very well could still be, at least at some level, a ladies man.
By the way, Russell Hitchcock turns 72 on June 15, which explains why he gets a little winded on the high notes these days.
Meanwhile, the taller member of Air Supply, Graham Russell, turns 71 on June 11.
Of all the blasts-from-the-past that I’ve seen at Ameristar in recent years, Air Supply puts on the best overall show. Those boys still put some effort into it.
Some of the other bands from days gone-by who still tour seem to just be putting in the time, not so much the effort.
There are several opportunities for summer fun upon us with Landmark Live.
We’ll be out at Legends Field to do a show at a Kansas City Monarchs game at some point this summer, likely later this month. Our man Chris Kamler is the substitute public address announcer at Monarchs games, so when he works a Thursday game we’ll take Landmark Live on the road for some pre-game fun. The Monarchs, for those who may not know, are the team formerly known as the Kansas City T-Bones. They play at the baseball stadium at The Legends in KCK.
On July 4, the City of Platte City will host some free food and fun downtown and Chris Kamler and yours truly have been recruited to be in the dunk tank at various times, giving you the opportunity to toss a fastball and send us into the water. The early schedule has Kamler sitting on the plank from 10:30 to 11 and yours truly from 11-11:30. Scary, because this means I’ll be getting dunked into the water after Kamler. This is unfortunate timing. Listen, I love Chris like a brother but that doesn’t mean I’m excited to jump into his bath water. I’m already a little freaky weird about public swimming pools and this ain’t helping matters. At least I’m up to date on my tetanus shot. But if Kamler shows up in a Speedo I’m out.
Then later in July is the Platte County Fair and you can plan on Landmark Live being there again, as we were in 2018 and 2019, having some fun in one form or another. One year we held an event we called the Redneck Olympics but I’m pretty sure the political correctness police told us you’re not supposed to use the term redneck in today’s climate. I don’t know if someone who identifies as a redneck got offended or if it was simply people thinking that self-identified rednecks might be offended. Either way, we’ll come up with a different name or just have plenty of fun without the country style olympics. Our apologies to any classy rednecks we may have offended. Thoughts and prayers.
Anyway, those are three summer fun events you can anticipate with Landmark Live, and don’t be surprised if there are others that end up on the schedule.
Facebook provides monthly analysis of the users on our page at Platte County Landmark. This morning, Facebook told me that 70% of the folks who like our page are female and 29% are male. Apparently Facebook is unsure how the remaining one percent of you identify.
Hey, that’s between you and Facebook. I’m not here to judge.
Who knows exactly why, but gasoline is typically cheaper in Parkville than it is in Platte City, and typically cheaper on North Oak than it is in Parkville.
So there you go. If you didn’t know, now you do.
The Sam’s Club on North Oak often has the lowest price of any outlet, just an fyi.
Unfortunately rain wiped out the Memorial Day ceremony in Platte City on Monday, which is actually one of my favorite low-key events of the year.
The cancellation meant we had to fill a hole on the front page that I had reserved for the ceremony, and the rain also ruined my chances to catch up with the guest speaker, Lt. Col. Teresa McCarthy, USMC (ret). She is the wife of DJ Gehrt, city administrator for Platte City, and I was hoping to chat with her in hopes of getting some background needling knowledge I could use against the city official.
Maybe next year.
