15 Years Ago–June 1, 2006

A groundbreaking ceremony this weekend will signify the beginning of construction of a new City Hall for Parkville. The ceremony is schedule to begin on Saturday at 10 a.m. at the site, located at Lewis and Clark Streets in the Parkville Commons near the Platte County Community Center. The split-level structure is expected to be completed early next spring. Saturday’s ceremony will open with remarks by Parkville Mayor Kathy Dusenbery.


The first weekend of June will be a busy one in Weston. Activities include a Ladies Night Out and the second Pub Crawl of the year.


Connor Spencer, 12, of Farley, recently won the 2006 Jackson County Regional Spelling Bee championship, sponsored by the Independence Examiner. As the winner. Connor received an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee May 31-June 1. The bee is televised on ESPN.


Jason Ciemiega of Platte County High School captured both the 110 and 300 meter hurdles at the state track meet last weekend. Ciemiega ran 14.24 and 38.49 respectively. Larry Marcel captured third in the long jump with a leap of 22 feet while Cheyenne Verdoorn took seventh in the 400 with a time of 60.19.
