After no ceremony last year due to COVID-19 restrictions, the annual Memorial Day service will return to the Platte City Cemetery this year, City of Platte City officials have announced.

Memorial Day is Monday, May 31 and the ceremony will begin at the Platte City Cemetery beginning at 10 a.m. The cemetery is located at the intersection of Fourth and North Streets in the north part of town.

The City of Platte City partners with VFW Post 4055, Platte Purchase Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and Boy Scout Troop 351 to honor and recognize veterans who served the country and to recite the names of those interred in the Platte City Cemetery in the past year.

The Platte City Lions Club will be hosting a light breakfast (coffee, donuts and juice) from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the Platte City Community Building located at 305 North Street, across the street from the cemetery. The event is open to the public.

Speaker for the Memorial Day Tribute will be Lt. Col Teresa McCarthy, USMC (ret).

Lt. Col. McCarthy is currently director of acquisitions for the US General Services Administration, Heartland Region. She ended her active duty career in 2005 as deputy commander of the Defense Finance Center, KCMO; following her military retirement she served as chief of contracting for the US Army Corps of Engineers in Afghanistan.

Boy Scout Troop 1351 will provide the color guard.

VFW Post 4055 is providing a rifle detail and ceremonial music.

The Platte Purchase Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will lead the recitation of In Flanders Fields and Memorial Day wreath laying ceremony.

All area residents, especially veterans and those whose family members have served in the armed forces, are encouraged to attend and participate in the ceremony.

In the event of inclement weather, the ceremony will not be held due to the difficulty of moving to an inside location.
