We watched and listened to the “zoom” meeting on March 16 during the period of time in which callers could make comments about the proposed sports complex. We were bothered by one of the comments from Marc Sportsman in which he indicated that a high percentage of the voters of Parkville passed the sales tax increase and implied this indicated support for the sports complex. We believe this vote was for the continued improvement of our parks but had the term “sports complex” been included we believe many of the voters would have been reluctant to support this at this location. We can only speak for ourselves but we do not consider the term “park” to include the sports complex.
We have enclosed a copy of the ballot which was used in the sales tax election. The term “sports complex” was never used. We realize that it is probably not practical to list every detail in a ballot. However, the sports complex is a major item as we have been told the expected expenditure of tax dollars will be in the neighborhood of $4 million. We voted for the increase in the sales tax believing it would be used to improve our park system. Had we known a sports complex was to be included we would have opposed it. It is our contention this has been poorly communicated to people of Parkville and should be totally reconsidered.
We are not opposed to the city constructing a sports complex for our youth. Platte Landing Park is simply not the place for this.
