The snow and ice that occurred on New Year’s Day caused a few traffic crashes in the area, including at least two on I-29 that were investigated by the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
At about 2:50 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 1, a one-vehicle crash on Interstate 29 about two miles north of the Camden Point exit injured two St. Joseph residents.
According to the crash report, a 2008 Nissan Sentra driven by Ricky L. Cadwallader, 52, was southbound and began to slide on the snow and ice-covered roadway. The vehicle traveled off the roadway and overturned, injuring the driver and one occupant, identified as Donna L. Cadwallader, 54.
Ricky Cadwallader’s injuries are described as minor in the crash report, while Donna Cadwallader’s injuries are described as serious.
Neither was wearing a safety belt, according to the highway patrol. Both were transported to North Kansas City Hospital by the Northland Regional Ambulance District.
Later on New Year’s Day, two people were injured in another one-vehicle crash on the ice-covered roadway. This crash occurred at 7:55 p.m. on northbound I-29 at 64th Street in southern Platte County.
According to the highway patrol, Derek A. Dickemann, 44, of Kansas City was driving a 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe when he lost control on the ice and struck the median. The vehicle then ran off the right side of the roadway and struck a ditch. The driver suffered minor injuries.
A passenger, Shannon R. Dickemann, 42, of Kansas City, also suffered minor injuries. Both were wearing safety belts, according to the crash report. Both were transported to Saint Luke’s on Barry Road by Kansas City Fire Department responders.
KCI Airport officially reported 2.2 inches of snow on New Year’s Day, with some areas experiencing a layer of ice under the snow.
